Psychodynamic psychotherapist
Psychological therapy and assessment with intelligence, curiosity and understanding.Online video consultations across Australia or face-to-face in Canberra.
Psychotherapy
Stephen's approach to psychotherapy is grounded in curiosity and deep understanding, balanced with playfulness and respect.Stephen offers psychotherapy for adults and young adults. He primarily practises from a relational psychodynamic approach to therapy, particularly intersubjective self psychology (ISP).This means that for Stephen, the aim of psychotherapy is to help his patients grow in vitality, self-cohesion, hope and connection through an empathic and generative therapeutic relationship. As an integrative and culturally-aware psychotherapist, Stephen also draws a range of evidence-supported therapeutic approaches tailored to each each person's preferences and values.
Therapeutic Assessment
Stephen also offers therapeutic assessment (TA) consultations.TA involves collaboratively selecting and using a tailored selection of psychological assessments and instruments to provide clients with greater insight and understanding into specific questions and concerns. These questions might relate to aspects of personality, mental health, relationships, cognitive style and performance, decision-making — or really anything else that is relevant and personally significant.TA is an empowering approach to psychological assessment (which is very different to how assessments are usually done) inviting clients onto the 'observation deck' of their lives and to explore new possibilities. Through this process of collaborative discovery and understanding, TA can be a meaningful part of a short-term approach to treatment.Alternatively, TA can be initiated from a referral by another therapist to provide insights to guide an existing course of therapy. TA can also be very beneficial for clients seeking a unique way to understand themselves in an executive/ leadership development context.
Please note that Stephen does not conduct psychological assessments outside of a direct therapeutic context. This includes court reports or reports for insurance, compensation, educational or forensic purposes.
